It still works like that in rural Colonia. People may have charge cards but prefer the old merchant credit system

Customer payments are recorded on individual card files kept at the back counter. Every time I go to a store to change dollars a la media, there are people putting up a few pesos towards their accounts.

There is a new cafe in Ciudad Vieja that has bagels on the menu. Not being a connoisseur, I can't vouch for them myself, but I have it on excellent authority 8-) that they are genuine bagels.
