Why Move to UY

Postby Marcelottu on Thu Mar 26, 2009 10:02 am

I have been a frequent visitor to this web site (thanks southron). It has been in an effort to get a better handle on life there from an American perspective. I have been positioning myself for the last year to move there and get some international living experience. I have thoroughly enjoyed my visits and enjoyed the people, the city, the food, and the laid back way of life.

Have a question for all members. Of all the options and places to move, why did you choose UY? What about it attracted you? Are you happy with your decision? Am very interested in your responses so feel free to chime in. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.

I'd have to say it's the u's. Where else can you live in a country that not only starts with U, but has two more as well? It's the type of thing others can only dream about.

April 12th will be our one year anniversary here in Uruguay, and we have no regets. We left the States looking for affordable health care. We found that here in Uruguay, and so much more. We have also found a happiness of peace and serenity that is hard to explain in writing. This country is so beautiful, and the kindness of the Uruguayan people has truely touched our hearts. Uruguay is our home, and we plan on staying here for the rest of our lives.
Sincerely,
S&D

Thanks for your responses. It has been shown that countries with a lot of U s tend to provide a happy environment. The people are nice also.

Being Canadian, I can't very well comment from an "American perspective", but like our friends Steve and Diane have said, I think we're here for the duration and are happy about it.

Cor! That was a while ago. Two years on and I'm still rebuilding my house :)

It took me about a year to get over my non-critical infatuation with the ROU but even after experiencing a few setbacks, I have no regrets at all about making Uruguay my new home. It is still my intention to end my days here.

Patrick.

Good you got over it... don't want to sound like you're on Kechichian's payroll.

Good one! Though I'm afraid most people reading this won't have a clue who she is!

The main question I was asking is how and why everyone chose UY vs other alternatives. It would also be interesting to know what adjustments have been the hardest to make.

For instance, for me the move has several motivations. Both my parents will retire there within the next year. I enjoy the pace, people, and food. To increase my international exposure (travel the southern cone) in a safe country and brush up on my spanish. For me the biggest adjustments (anticipated) would be no car and air conditioning, although I hear the weather is not as hot and humid as good ole Houston and there is actually public transportation.
